After the Super Bowl tonight my family watched The Box Trolls, one of the most fantastic claymation movies ever made. Don't believe me? Try it. Anyways, the subject matter really hit home for me. It also lined up with the theme of another movie I recently watched. Django Unchained.
We have been trained, like dogs. Most of us were trained in Government institutions with the agenda to make us all compliant servants of the machine. We are taught not to question "science" or "history", and as Seth Godin said; "...To believe that knowledge is a static thing that existed before us." Let that sink in a moment.
We so easily forget that there is a real group of people that stand to benefit from this thinking. The ruling class. It has always been so. Towards the end of Django, Mr. Candie says something very interesting about being a slave owner.
"This is Ben. He's a old Joe that lived around here for a long time. And I do mean a long damn time. Well Ben here took care of my daddy and my daddy's daddy, till he up and keeled over one day. Old Ben took care of me. Growing up the son of a huge plantation owner in Mississippi puts a white man in contact with a whole lot of black faces. I spent my whole life here right here in Candyland, surrounded by black faces. And seeing them every day, day in day out, I only had one question. Why don't they kill us? Now right out there on that porch three times a week for fifty years, old Ben here would shave my daddy with a straight razor. Now if I was old Ben, I would have cut my daddy's goddamn throat, and it wouldn't have taken me no fifty years to do it neither. But he never did. Why not?"
Good question Mr. Candie. I ask this question everyday. Why does the world's population throughout history bend to the will of a few greedy and immoral people with the sociopathic drive to control others through politics, religion, and education? They make our little boxes and they form us all into them and anyone who questions it? Well, that's easy. Just call them a name and shame them in the mass media that is controlled by these same greedy immoral people! Here are a few we are currently used to hearing: Conspiracy theorist, environmentalist, left wing nut, conservative wacko, etc. These are ad hominem attacks that make it easy for us to dismiss each other because we heard it from "authority".
And it seems that the majority (at least in the U.S.) still buy it. Our society seems to have no problem accepting that authority taught us to respect authority so that authority could continue to maintain that authority and easily squash anyone who questions them. Again, let that sink in, cause it is actually pretty fucked.
We have the razor blade against their throats, so why don't we use it? What are we afraid of? Are we going to continue being slaves shoved in our little boxes for the benefit of the ruling class? Or will we actually take action and slice their throats and take our freedom and our responsibility?
I hope it's the latter.
I leave you with the lyrics from the song at the end of The Box Trolls as it sums up what is going on well.
Little boxes on a hillside, little boxes made of ticky-tacky
Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes just the same
There’s a pink one, and a green one, and a blue one, and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky, and they all look just the same
And the people in the houses learn their trade
Cause they were put in boxes and they came out all the same
There're white hats and red hats and they imagine they are businessmen
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky and they all look just the same
And they all go to the theater where they drink their pennies need
And they all have pretty children and they send them off to school
They raise them and love them and send them to university
Where they are put in boxes and they all come out the same
It will be alright
