We love leaders. Always have. Since the dawn of time we have elected the strongest, wisest, best looking, and wealthiest people to lead us as tribes of people. It turns out that in small tribes living together in a small area this works really well because of the accountability of intimacy. In large organizations of people this works terribly. The reason is; we can be mislead by said leader on only one of these attributes (And typically the worst of all, the best looking). We historically nearly always choose leaders who abuse their power and those whom they lead.
I've chosen to pick on Catholicism only because of the association of the word pope and how it relates to their favorite book. Not mention as one of the largest and wealthiest religious organisations, this is a common problem for them. (Need we go into all of the scandals publicized about church leaders?)
The word Pope is interesting because it literally means Papa or Father. The Pope is said to be the one who communicates directly with the Godhead and brings daily revelation to the church. How convenient. Especially since they ignore this line from their very own text.
And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. –Jesus, Matthew 23:9
Many people desperately want to communicate with God. Always have. Suddenly in the 4th and 5th century an organization is built by the Romans that controls a massive organic movement that happened around a famous Jew. How convenient for the Roman government.
How many millions or billions have been killed, tortured, manipulated or fleeced and used by this organization during the last 1600 years? And this is only one of an increasing myriad of organizations that would love to continue this historic trend for their benefit.
But we can change this. One person at a time. By changing our minds about our reality. The reality is that there are no mediators to anything in life. There is no one who can tell you what the Godhead says. Only the Godhead can do that. To you. Directly. And this goes for everything else as well. You have a better idea of how your community should run and what infrastructure it needs than a bloated Federal Government does.
Your life is yours to make how you want it. And it doesn't matter what you chase, you are responsible. You make your choices. You decide your destiny. When you do, you decide ours as well. We all do. Together. Every day.
This is not to say there is no need for teachers, leaders and authority. But it must be within a new reasoning, a new set of guidelines and rules that we derive from our culture, not the other way around.
In the meantime, don't make people into idols. They make terrible gods.
